ASHP Foundation Thanks 2014 Midyear
Attendees for Generous Support
A
ttendees of the 2014 ASHP Mid-
year Meeting in Anaheim helped
the Foundation raise $56,211 in
unrestricted funds during the
Nov-Dec Donor Match period, including
nearly $7,000 in honoraria donated by Mid-
year speakers and panelists. The donations
made this another record-breaking year for
the ASHP Foundation.
“The ASHP Foundation is dependent upon
the support of individual and corporate
donors to accomplish our mission, and the
Midyear is very significant to our fundraising
efforts,” said ASHP Foundation CEO Stephen
J. Allen, M.S., FASHP.
The ASHP Foundation’s annual Donor
Match Reception hosted more than 200
new and existing donors and this event
alone brought in a total of $47,755. The total
included $27,455 for the Foundation’s An-
nual Fund, plus $20,300 in gifts restricted
to the Manasse Fund, Zilz Fund, Zellmer

Profile: Rep.
Todd Young
A
SHP depends on our friends
in Congress to help us move
our advocacy agenda for-
ward. One such friend is Rep.
Todd Young (R-IN), one of the original
cosponsors of pharmacist provider legis-
lation introduced in 2104, H.R. 4190.
Congressman Todd Young represents
the Ninth District of Indiana. He serves
on the House Ways and Means Commit-
tee, which has jurisdiction over taxes,
healthcare, Social Security, Medicare, in-
ternational trade and welfare. Rep. Young
serves on the House Ways and Means
Committee, which has jurisdiction over
taxes, health care, Social Security, Medi-
care, international trade and welfare. He
previously served on the House Armed
Services Committee and the House Bud-
get Committee.
After graduating from the U.S. Naval
Academy, he accepted a commission in
the U.S. Marine Corps. After leaving
the Marines in 2000, Rep. Young spent a
year in England, where he wrote a thesis
on the economic history of Midwestern
agriculture and earned an M.A. from the
School of Advanced Study in London.
Upon returning to the United States, he
accepted a position at The Heritage Foun-
dation and later worked as a legislative
assistant in the U.S. Senate.
In 2003, he returned home to Indiana
and worked for several years as a man-
agement consultant and completed his
law degree at Indiana University. He was
elected to Congress in 2010.
A fifth generation “Hoosier,” Congress-
man Young and his wife, Jenny, live in
Bloomington, Indiana, and have four
young children.
The ASHP Foundation’s Donor Match Reception attracted more than 200 donors.
Dr. Roger Anderson was honored as a Legacy
Society member.
Rep. Todd Young has been a strong supporter
of pharmacist provider legislation.
Momentum for Provider Status to Continue in 2015
W
hen Congress adjourned
last December, H.R. 4190,
legislation that will address
pharmacist provider status
in the Social Security Act boasted more than
120 co-sponsors. The bill is slated for re-
introduction in early 2015, and ASHP expects
that the legislation will exceed its impressive
performance.
Each Congress begins with a clean slate,
which means that H.R. 4190 and other leg-
islation that was not passed during the 113
th
Congress needs to be re-introduced in the
new 114
th
Congress. Although provider status
legislation is likely to have a new bill number
and may also receive a formal title, or name,
the provisions are expected to remain the
same. The bill would allow pharmacists to bill
Medicare for services authorized by their state
scope of practice provided to patients living in
medically underserved communities.
Much of H.R. 4190’s success was due to the
work of the thousands of ASHP members who
contacted their members of Congress to ask for
support of the bill. Once the new bill is intro-
duced, ASHP will again call on members to ask
their congressional representatives to either re-
new their support for provider status legislation
or sign on as co-sponsors for the first time.
You can get a head start by reaching out to
your members of Congress today to let them
know that provider status is important to you.
Personalize the email provided on ASHP’s
Advocacy Center with examples from your
practice that demonstrate the value that phar-
macists bring to patient care. Be sure to ask to
meet with your representatives their while they
are back home during a recess or district work
period.
