ACOFP: Our Continuing History

Tejal R. Patel Ryan M. Smith Gautam J. Desai YEAR OF FIRSTS 65 The ACOFP creates the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Award, and Tejal R. Patel, DO, is the first recipient of the award. ACOFP wins the AOA Outstanding Affiliate of the Year Award. 2022 ACOFP is awarded the SIIA IMPACT Equity Award, Team Award: Less than 50 Employees, which recognizes teams demonstrating significant progress and identifiable achievement toward efforts related to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion. The ACOFP Education & Research Foundation changes its name to the ACOFP Foundation. 2023 On April 1, the ACOFP Foundation reaches its $2 million fundraising goal for “Forging Our Osteopathic Future,” more than a year ahead of schedule. ACOFP is selected as the recipient of AOA’s 2023 Organizational DEI Unification Award in recognition of ACOFP’s leadership and great contributions toward advancing osteopathic medicine. 2024 On April 3, Ryan M. Smith, DO, FAAFP, becomes the first New Physician-inPractice Governor. Also on April 3, the ACOFP Foundation officially launches the “Family Medicine Forward” campaign to raise $750,000 to enhance programs like the Future Leaders Conference and increase engagement for residents and early career physicians through year-round programming, mentorship, and networking opportunities. On April 6-7, ACOFP holds the first of its kind “Think Tank,” supported by a grant from the ABFM Foundation. Think Tank participants reviewed collected research, identified needed tools and resources, and presented Shark Tankstyle pitches to a panel of judges for how to best promote family medicine as a viable and attractive profession to prospective students. 2025 Gautam J. Desai, DO, FACOFP dist., becomes ACOFP’s first Indian American president.
