ACOFP: Our Continuing History

Mary Burnett Norman Jankowski 60 1965 In September, the inaugural Conclave of Fellows induction ceremony is held with the induction of its first 24 ACGP Fellows. J. Myron Auld, DO, FACGP, is elected as the conclave’s first president. 1966 ACGP seeks to establish general practice as a bona fide specialty within the osteopathic medical certification process. However, it is met with intense resistance from the members of the osteopathic certifying board, the National Board of Osteopathic Examiners (NBOE), and the Advisory Board to Osteopathic Specialist (ABOS), disputing that doctors could specialize in “general” practice. 1968 In February, the ACGP Board informs the AOA of their intention to form an independent certifying board for family practice. After much acrimonious debate, the ACGP Board is granted permission to establish an ACGP certifying entity. 1972 Mary M. Burnett, DO, FACGP, is inaugurated as ACGP’s first female president. The American Osteopathic Board of General Practitioners (AOBGP) is established as the certifying board for osteopathic general practitioners and elects Mancil Fish, DO, FACGP, as its first chairman. AOBGP conducts its first certifying exam for general practitioners at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles, California, with 200 physicians completing the exam. T. Robert Sharp, DO, FACGP, ACGP immediate past president, is issued certificate No. 1 for being instrumental in all facets of making certification a reality. 1974 ACGP’s first residency program, headed by Residency Director Norman Jankowski, DO, FACGP, graduates its first resident in osteopathic general practice, James B. Donahue, DO.
