ACOFP: Our Continuing History

ACOFP: OUR CONTINUING HISTORY 127 Leadership The 50th ACOFP president, Dr. Porcelli was born in 1950, the same year ACOFP organized. At his installation, it had been 50 years since a physician from California had held this prestigious office. Dr. Porcelli attended the Midwestern University Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine before entering practice in Pomona, California. He always jokes that he graduated “Magna Cum Fortunato,” and this may be one reason why he was so focused on membership services and building bridges with other organizations. His dream had been to present a published ACOFP history in its 50th year, but the project was too daunting, so he made it a priority of his presidency. As a former member of the Archival and Historical Committee, he was able to provide the guidance needed to complete the publication. Dedicated to lifelong learning, Dr. Porcelli holds certifications in Osteopathic Family Practice and Manipulative Medicine, Geriatric Medicine, Sports Medicine, and Addiction Medicine. He has served on the Board of Governors since 1995 and is an ACOFP Fellow. He was the 2001 California Family Physician of the Year and previously served as president of the ACOFP California Chapter and president of the AOA state affiliated division of the Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons of California. He is the father of seven children, including his oldest son, who is training to become an osteopathic physician. Dr. Porcelli championed the development of affordable electronic medical records for the practicing member and initiated ACOFP programs for electronic prescriptions and billing. He fostered development of more skill modules for the ACOFP Center for Excellence in Procedural Medicine, including a fully funded Spirometry Skills workshop. Dr. Porcelli served as membership chair and wanted to give back to ACOFP’s rich history and provide the guidance needed. Conventions were in his blood: he was a meeting monger and loved attending meetings to evaluate members, foster thought, and perhaps redirect for an amicable solution. During his presidential term, Dr. Porcelli worked to award service back to the dedicated veteran member. Those who worked with him would say he served with a servant’s heart and a lion’s paw. 2004–2005 R. GREG MAUL, DO, FACOFP Rowlett, Texas A board-certified family physician, Dr. Maul completed his medical training at the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, Missouri. His training in family practice was at the Dallas Fort Worth Medical Center in Grand Prairie, Texas. Dr. Maul has served as chair of multiple ACOFP departments, a member of the ACOFP Board of Governors, and past president of the Texas Osteopathic Medical Association Board of Trustees and the Texas ACOFP. Currently, he practices family medicine in Rowlett, Texas, and is on active staff at Baylor Scott & White Family Medical Center in Garland. Dr. Maul and his wife, Stacy, are blessed with five children: Michael, Kyle, Eric, Alison, and Lindsay.
