ACOFP: Our Continuing History

102 Leadership LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE (LDC) In 2022, the Congress of Delegates passed a resolution to change the name of the Nominating Committee to the Leadership Development Committee. The goal of this name change was to better reflect the committee’s efforts to provide year-round support to ACOFP members looking to grow their leadership abilities and become more involved in ACOFP. One way to do this, based upon another recommendation from the DEI Task Force, was to more clearly communicate the various leadership opportunities for students, residents, new professionals, and practicing physicians. The goal was to be more transparent about ways to engage in ACOFP for those who may not yet have a mentor to help them advance in ACOFP’s leadership. To this end, the LDC launched a series of webpages. The newly formed LDC now consists of a mix of past presidents and members at-large. An interview matrix was also created to guide the process of selection, help standardize the assessment, and remove barriers from pathways to board leadership. Candidates are also asked to answer questions in advance of the formal interview — two in written format and one video-recorded response, which includes the candidate’s commitment to or experience with DEI. Each year, the LDC meets with the Board of Governors to learn about its needs, so that this can be considered when interviewing candidates. The board also conducts a yearly self-assessment and shares these growth opportunities with the LDC. New leadership development support is also being considered for current leaders. THE ACOFP RESIDENT COUNCIL The ACOFP Resident Council was established in 2017 to serve as the representative body for all ACOFP resident members and to promote involvement, leadership, and advocacy among residents within ACOFP and its respective state societies. The council acts as a bridge between residents and these organizations, addressing resident needs and ensuring their voices are heard. One of the council’s key responsibilities is drafting, discussing, and submitting resolutions to the ACOFP Congress of Delegates that reflect the collective opinions and concerns of residents nationwide. The council is composed of 12 regional representatives, who are elected by the current ACOFP resident council members, and a resident governor, who is elected to serve a concurrent term — bringing the total to 13 members. Each ACOFP affiliate society with a resident member on its board is encouraged to nominate that member for consideration as a regional representative to the council, which is organized into six geographic regions.
