96 Leadership PRECEPTORSHIP PROGRAM In 2002, administration and funds of the Preceptorship Program were transitioned from ACOFP to the ACOFP Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization, to facilitate fundraising from ACOFP members, corporate interests, and other foundations. In 2011, this became a restricted fund with goals to identify and educate highquality preceptors, to promote excellence and innovation in the education of third- and fourthyear osteopathic medical students, and to enhance student interest in osteopathic family medicine. Funding supports the Clinical Preceptor Education Series, which includes faculty development programs, online learning modules for adjunct and part-time clinical educators, and specialized medical education programs. LEGACY CIRCLE The ACOFP Foundation Board of Directors established the Legacy Circle in 2003. It includes gifts to the foundation through a will, living (revocable) trust, insurance plan, or retirement or pension plan, which help nourish the next generation of osteopathic family physicians. Bequests, such as cash, retirement, pension, and IRA assets, insurance policy proceeds payable to the foundation, and/ or marketable securities through a person’s estate to the foundation, are deducted from a donor’s gross estate prior to computing federal estate tax. NAMEY/BURNETT WRITING AWARD This award commemorates two of the greatest family medicine physicians, who were dedicated advocates in the osteopathic family medicine profession: Joseph Namey, DO, FACOFP dist., and Mary Burnett, DO, FACOFP dist. Annually, the ACOFP Foundation is honored to present the Namey/Burnett Writing Award competition, which honors the best preventative medicine blog posts submitted by osteopathic family medicine residents, interns, and students. Blog posts are judged on originality, pertinence to osteopathic family physicians and their patients, adaptability to patient handouts, and writing skills. SANDER A. KUSHNER, DO, FACOFP, MEMORIAL OSTEOPATHIC FAMILY MEDICINE RESIDENT AWARD Dr. Sander A. Kushner had a passion for osteopathic family medicine and an equally strong commitment to teaching. His legacy and impact on osteopathic medicine are evident through the physicians he trained and the colleagues with whom he worked, but most importantly within the communities where he practiced. This award started in 2017 in conjunction with the Kushner family and the ACOFP Foundation, and it is available to osteopathic physicians who are enrolled in ACGME-accredited family medicine residencies with osteopathic recognition. Recipients must exemplify outstanding academic achievement, a strong commitment to careers in osteopathic family medicine, and a dedication to continuing Dr. Kushner’s legacy.
